Why did you become a school Governor?

I retired from working for Kirklees in 2017 and becoming a Governor had been on my mind for a while. After talking with Richard when we were both working at the council, I decided to formally step forward and volunteer. My own children were all educated in local schools, and I had some useful experience of special educational needs strategies from work, but I hasten to add I was not a specialist as I did not work in education. I knew I had loads to learn about both the work of Southgate and teaching. I saw this as an exciting challenge and opportunity and chance to get involved as best I could and I was pleased to join the school. I wanted to make a difference to a school and the outcomes for pupils and was positive I could do that through my involvement.

What are you involved in as a Governor?

I have enjoyed the role and working with colleagues, both Governors and staff. All Governors bring skills and knowledge so for me that has meant being one of the lead Governors for children who are Looked After and have been Looked After by the Local Authority, Safeguarding and also finance and strategy. Excellent training is available from the council for all governors to develop new skills. As an example, my most recent training has been about safer recruitment. Everyone has a lead role on different aspects of the work of the school. Southgate is a really supportive and welcoming school and encourages active participation and challenge from Governors. The important aspect is bringing in your own ideas and interests.

Time commitments can vary so some weeks are quiet and others can be full on with both regular responsibilities such as lead role visits, meetings and other tasks that need Governor involvement, such as an Ofsted visit or staffing matters.

What do you get out of the role?

I enjoy working as part of a team. Being part of a caring and well led school that values young people is very special and a privilege. It is great seeing the school develop and change and the amazing progress made by pupils. It was excellent to be part of the school team for the positive Ofsted grading.

It is good to be able to bring in ideas and make use of your own links and networks to contribute to the school. As an example, I have been working with staff over several years on graphic arts week.

I am proud to represent Southgate.
